About

The Inspiration behind this site.

It was, indeed a Hot Flash of insight.

I became concerned about women,  especially women of “ a certain age” about 10 years ago. I realized that we women live longer than men, but we have less money. We need to ask ourselves some important questions. Like how are we going to support ourselves for the 20, or 30 more years after our hot flashes begin?

How  will we maintain our dignity,

and our sense of humor,

if our money runs out

before we run out of breath?

I wanted to encourage each woman to take action to  make sure she would be Financially Secure.

But how was I to do that ? How would I get you to listen to me, and take the steps that were and still are in your best interest?

Well I was an academic. I had earned a Ph.D. But I decided I also needed another degree before I even tried to give you advice. So I earned an MBA in Finance

Then I worked hard for 10 years teaching seminars in places like Brandeis University’s Women’s Studies Research Center and the Massachusetts Money Conference for Women. I became a member of a Task Force for Financial Literacy of the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants. But women were resistant to taking action. So I conducted research on the reasons women give for “not acting”– to put money to work for their future.

When I moved to Washington D.C., I worked  on financial literacy, attending meetings of the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Literacy and Education, as well as ASEC Partner’s Meeting. And I was pleased to join and  continue to work with with the Post-Retirement Needs and Risks Projects of the Society of Actuaries.

I worked one-on-one with  women, at Morgan Stanley and later Banc of America Investment Services, Inc. (now Merrill Lynch), and in my private financial planning firm for 10 years to help women.  I tried to encourage women to contribute more to their retirement accounts, and to spousal IRAs. I encouraged women to write a will and a trust, if only to make sure that their children receive the care they will need if their parents die prematurely.

But the progress was slow. And I heard every excuse.

  • I don’t have enough money to save for my old age/retirement or pay down debt.
  • I live paycheck to paycheck.
  • I  don’t have the time.
  • I don’t’ want to do this at all.
  • I let my husband do it.
  • I think, deep down inside, I really want to be “taken care of.”
  • I don’t want to think about it.
  • I am really afraid of what I will find, or not find.

And I heard probably the most honest response: I don’t trust myself to do this.

I was polite when I heard these excuses for 10 long years. But I realized that we, you and I, are getting older.  Our  need to take action to increase our security is more acute.

We have to begin to take action.

The Time is NOW!

So I decided to develop a website for women like you and me,  Women of a “certain age and distinction.”

It had to have a catchy name. HOT FLASH FINANCIAL might work.

It had to be different. Because there are a lot of good sites out there, that offer DIY financial planning, etc. But too few readers actually DO anything about their finances.

We women explain that we don’t do anything because

  • We feel too stressed
  • We are fearful of risk
  • We are afraid we will not “do it right”, that is perfectly the first time
    • After all, many of us get paid less than a man would. So we do not have much margin for error. The stress is real!
The Design of this site
So I tried to design a site where you can relieve your stress, with a littLe LAUGHTER .
  • You can giggle a bit when you recognize your SELF and your foibles.
  • Maybe share some giggles with your best friends
  • Just let the tension ….go.
And I wanted to design a site that would give you Step-by-Step instructions, like the girls do at the Beauty Counter. The little steps let you try to DO something new, with your hair or your eyes. You practice it. And you get better at it. That seemed like a good model.
[text box:  This site is designed for you and your friends,. So you and your friends can begin to take steps  to reduce the stress you face with shortages of money. And you can begin to take real action, to DO things, to increase your economic security.]

But we had to do a little more. We had to combat that stress, reduce it as much as we could. How? We had to be able to have some fun, and laugh along the way.

Why not?

So each time you take a step, you get some release.  A little giggle or, hopefully, a great GUFFAW!

Let’s take action, step by step. We can  work together to make your life better.

Let’s start with a  joke about our  HOT FLASHES. Each time you feel that heat rising, and the sweat coming on, you know that it is a reminder to ACT! in your self interest to improve your financial security. So click on this site, as the heat rises. And take important steps to improve your future.

Let’s laugh together as we work together.

So you can enjoy the dignity that comes from knowing that you have enough money to pay for everything you need today and in your future.

And have a little fun while you are achieving that financial security.
